Why I Started Hand & Heart

I started Hand & Heart for an array of reasons.

First, I saw a need. As an educator, it can be heartbreaking to watch a student struggle with a concept you know they could understand with just a little more time, support, or explicit instruction.

I have taught a 12-year-old in third grade, a fifth grader who could not yet read on a first-grade level, and some of the sweetest students who simply did not understand until I explained the same concept 30 times in three or four different ways. Difference does not equal deficiency. Sometimes children simply need someone who is willing to slow down, try another approach, and continue believing in them.

Another reason I started Hand & Heart was to begin building a bridge toward my future career. We are currently a Dual Learning Family, combining public school with intentional learning at home. This has worked beautifully for us over the last six years, but within the next four years, I plan to begin transitioning away from the traditional classroom so that I can homeschool our children during middle and high school.

I want to maintain my connection with the amazing students and families I've met throughout more than a decade in education while transitioning into this new season of life.

The final reason is connected to my own personal education and growth. I have always wanted to start a business. In fact, I have attempted several! I have tried shirt making, made soaps and candles with my mom as a child, and even opened an in-home daycare when my daughter was an infant.

I plan to share more about each of these experiences on this blog because they have all taught me something valuable. Every experience, every student, and every dream holds a special place in my Hand & Heart.
